Vegetarian Resource Group scholarship
If you have a passion for animal rights and are committed to promoting a more compassionate and humane world, you might be the perfect candidate for a $5,000 scholarship from the Baltimore-based Vegetarian Resource Group. The program is geared toward graduating high school students who have exhibited courage and compassion by promoting the vegetarian lifestyle in their schools and communities. The award is given to two U.S. students annually.
As with most scholarships as valuable as this one, there is some work involved. The program asks all interested students to submit an essay addressing a series of issues, including how you have promoted vegetarianism in your community, how you plan to promote it in the future, and what vegetarianism means to you. Merely pretending to be vegetarian just to enter the running probably won't work, as some of the questions are quite specific to the vegetarian way of life.
Applicants are also asked to provide transcripts, report cards, at least three recommendations (including at least one from a teacher), and any documentation you can offer relating to your promotion of vegetarianism in your high school or community. The deadline is in February of the year the student expects to graduate. More information can be found on the Vegetarian Resource Group website.
